I'm about an hour into it. Good so far. I knew about the generals plot to kill Hitler, of course. It's interesting to see all the details, the interaction between characters. I'm glad they tried. It's too bad they failed.
Something shocking, though. I had it in my head that it was a long time ago, long before my birth, long before ME. But then I realized, the war ended in 1945. That's only 13 years before I was born. Not so long ago, after all. Thirteen years is nothing. Thirteen years is how old a Jewish boy is when he is considered to be a man.
There's a line in the film. They were saying that they wanted to overthrow Hitler before the end of the war. They wanted to do this because they wanted to show the rest of the world that they weren't all like Hitler. Otherwise, after the war, Germany would always be known as "Hitler's Germany". And that's what happened. That's how I see them, at least. When I think of Germany, I always think of Hitler, of genocide, of filth and sadism and murder. That's his legacy. I wonder how long that legacy will last? Probably as long as people in Germany deny the Holocaust or say that it's an exaggeration. People think that. Isn't that amazing?
