This is a good thing.

Diana Gabaldon wrote a new book in her series. I loved the first series. Amazing books. Extremely well-written. Good characters. Good plot lines. I wasn't quick to pick up on the new book, because I thought she had wrapped it up in the last book -- thought she'd be just going over a lot of the old stuff. And given the way the last one ended, I'm pretty sure she thought she was done, too. She just couldn't give them up.

Anyway, the library was giving books away (one book free if you join the annual book club) -- I will never turn down a free book -- and I picked up her latest book. It's huge, as usual. It'll take me a week to read it, maybe two, depending on the glut factor, but I can tell already it's not just a retread.

She's taken the characters and the storyline and started up a new path, one which organically grows from the old books. Amazing. And fun. Which makes me feel both good and relieved. Anticipatory. There are still books to read in the world which aren't total shit. And since writing and reading are the only things in the world that keep my shit together, this is a very good thing.
